We're lucky to have him now. We have to find a way to keep him in the lineup.

It may look like they're not hustling, but [Ramirez] hurt his leg hustling out a play to first base about a month ago. In order for us not to lose him for two weeks or more, we urged him to play smart. It's going to look bad, and sometimes the fans are going to think he's not hustling. But that's what he has to do.

My wife [Melissa] talked to his mom, and she said he led every league coming up in home runs. The main thing is, he puts the ball in play, makes contact and gets hits. He's ahead of most guys already.

There are a couple games, but all in all, I can't chastise them for not focusing and concentrating. I know when things are going poorly, it's a little more difficult to concentrate. We're just not getting it done.

We've had a total letdown in that area. It bothers the heck out of me, it bothers my coaches, and it bothers the players when it happens to them.

Competition sometimes will make you sharper than you believe you are. Anybody who watched those games, you could tell it was serious competition.

They'll have to get some concentrated at-bats. Every year, I send guys who I don't think are ready down to the Minor Leagues to hit at the top and bottom of the order so they get nine to 18 at-bats at a time. When they get back, I'll find out exactly how much they played. In the case of a catcher, you have to get his legs ready squatting up and down in a game, too. We'll do whatever we can to get them ready.

You hope it's just a minor setback. We have to stay positive and keep our fingers crossed.

I talked to him. He's tired of it, too. You could tell he was a little distraught about the whole thing. He wants to pitch. He wants to pitch with nothing wrong.

We are very impressed. That's not the issue here. The issue is for him to play and to prosper. And to get better at some of the fundamentals of the game. The only way to get that is to play.

You would think over the course of a winter -- actually three winters, two winters -- that guys would come back strong and healthy, which hasn't been the case. Woody had a little setback with his knee, but his arm is doing well. He's throwing the ball great. Hopefully, Woody will be ready soon. How soon we don't know. We have Wade Miller coming on pretty strong. We just have to pull our belts a little tighter and do what we have to do.

There are some guys who have the nod because of experience. There are some guys who have demonstrated better control and better stuff than others. We'll see how they do the last couple weeks of spring and how they do when they go to Triple-A or Double-A.

You want him to go out and pitch the way he has pitched before.
