[Quaker's] food line is in a declining state and it doesn't appear to have much of an upside. All the cereal makers are busy with other acquisitions right now, so that wouldn't bode well for Pepsi.

While we continue to believe Smithfield is undervalued and merits our 'buy' rating, it is less undervalued than when we upgraded the stock in May.

Leg quarter prices have fallen from a record level of 50 cents a pound last fall to 29 cents a pound today and still seem to be falling. We believe at least some of this is due to consumer concern in the export markets regarding avian influenza.

We often highlighted the extraordinary degree of earnings sensitivity at Pilgrim's Pride to chicken market prices, and to a lesser, but still strong, degree feed costs. Despite its size and efforts toward branding and value-added, the company is clearly not immune to the inherent volatility of the various protein sectors.

With Kellogg stock down 3.5% over the past 12 months, we now feel there is sufficient upside in the stock to justify an upgrade. Market share gains have continued in cereal despite General Mills' return to competitiveness.

The company still continues to deliver on double-digit annual (earnings per share) growth as promised, but the quality is lower.

Management has cracked the code on how to sell soup at higher prices, partly because it is now smarter on how it spends its marketing dollars.
