While (Wilma won't affect) the oil sector, expect the insurance, retail and construction sectors to be heavily traded this week. With the October Consumer confidence and home sales due out later, the U.S. market could well end up deep in the red as inflation keeps the pressure on.

The retail sales are a real blow-out number. They show that economic activity is healthy but they will also ignite fears that the Fed will continue raising interest rates as it takes these numbers as a sign that the economy is still growing strongly.

These data indicate that wholesale deliveries to retailers are falling quickly, responding to the slowing pace of retail sales. However, deliveries from manufacturers and imports have not slowed as sharply. Unless retail sales revive, wholesalers will continue to cut their orders from manufacturers and imports, maintaining the downward pressure on the factory sector.

The bigger story here is the return to historical norm of the sales number. The 7 percent internal growth number will help build a higher level of confidence that the company's investment efforts in hiring sales personnel is paying off.

Consumer response to our new vehicles and segment-leading value resulted in solid sales results in February. Our retail sales improvement in February was driven by our industry-leading value, not by fleet sales or high incentives. This resulted in better retail sales performance by six of our divisions.

If November sales are good and inventory is under control, that takes some of the sales pressure off in December.

It confirms the belief that the weakness in retail sales was the result of a bunker mentality in the wake of the terrible events of Sept. 11.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.
