While (Wilma won't affect) the oil sector, expect the insurance, retail and construction sectors to be heavily traded this week. With the October Consumer confidence and home sales due out later, the U.S. market could well end up deep in the red as inflation keeps the pressure on.

Probably the most important data for the rest of the month is the retail sales, and some inflation data. The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending. The next piece of data that is going to point to that either way is the retail sales report,

Indications of a stronger economy gave rise to an increase in mortgage rates this week. Consumer confidence and existing home sales unexpectedly rose. Much of this strength is attributed to a healthy labor market, which translates into greater consumer spending. This should support an active housing market over the next few months.

It's going to come down to how sales are pre-Christmas, what we hear from the retail sector, ... I would expect next week, while remaining positive, to have not as robust a move as we saw this week.

The Dax is an index of 30 stocks and in periods of high volatility smaller indices become much harder to diversify. Also the Dax is heavily biased towards sectors like technology and insurance and those are the sectors that have been most heavily hit over the last nine months.

It's a busy week in terms if earnings with three sectors of the technology sector reporting. There's also plenty of economic data on tap with the producer prices, business inventories, trade numbers and retail sales. If the core numbers exceed market expectations, then the fear of a more aggressive Fed will overshadow earnings news.

The renewed strength in home sales reflects lower mortgage rates; we expect rates to dip to a 14-month low this week. The housing rebound will ensure construction sector strength in the first quarter of 2001. No recession here.

You're getting quarterly reports and news about August sales this week, and retail stocks have also been beaten down, so you're seeing some strength in the sector. Retailers have managed their second half of the year well, which is positive for back-to-school and Christmas sales, both crucial for the sector.

It's good news because it shows there's no creeping inflation. And the Fed is not worried about inflation. What they care about is the manufacturing side of things, retail sales and consumer spending.

The market interpreted recently released retail sales figures as a sign that the economy may now be recovering faster than originally thought, bringing fear of inflation back into the picture, ... But the good news is that April's Consumer Price Index (CPI), which came out [Wednesday], indicates inflation remains under control. This should help keep mortgage rates stable for the foreseeable future.
