Sue went to a different level. She got everybody organized, kept everybody focused, moreso than a regular-season kind of deal. Betty stepped up verbally, so yeah, it's a different gear.

It was kind of like last year. The kids stepped up big against two teams that had beaten us in the regular season.

We have completely stepped up our defensive level. We're much better than what we were earlier in the season. It's kind of what I've been preaching all year long. We're starting to mesh and play together a lot more than we were early in the season.

Kris is an ultra-focused, ultra-competitive guy. It's a pretty amazing deal. There's nobody I know in the world who's competing at an elite level in endurance athletics who has that kind of issue going on. It just made him more focused. It was incredible, his reaction.

Matt Stiles stepped up huge. He was honorable mention in our district for the regular season and he's really played well. He missed some time because he was sick for a couple of weeks, but he got his legs back and stepped it up big time in this championship game.

When we shook hands after the game, I asked if he was playing forward or defense. He is a very gifted player in his ability to see the ice. You have to have that extra gear in the gearbox at the next level. You don't know what it's like until you get there because it's a whole other level. But I think if you look at the percentages, I would think Matt has a good chance of having that extra gear. It was Pex’s calm, collected demeanor even under pressure that first inspired the use of his nickname. When we shook hands after the game, I asked if he was playing forward or defense. It kind of gives focus back on regular life. Everybody's so focused on getting hurricane repairs completed and stuff like this. This is kind of a break and it gives everybody a chance to look at something different, and get your mind off of what is going on.

Yeah, I'm absolutely concerned about the penalties. I don't know if you get different officiating in the preseason and the regular season. But what we'll do is look at every one of them, and coach them.

It's anybody's tournament to win. Tournament play is so different from regular-season play. There are so many dynamics at work: consistency, fatigue, pitching. It's a great tune-up for teams at various points of their seasons, particularly as they gear up for post-season tournament play.

Back in 1990, the (league) championship was a mad, mad celebration. It never affected that team because it was a magical year. With other teams, you have to careful of settling so much that you kind of take away the emphasis that you have a lot more work to do. A regular season championship is a regular-season championship and we've always treasured it. It's important to us. Is it the most important thing? No.

I'm just trying to take charge of the offense. Last year, I was thrown in there as a freshman. You're a freshman and, of course, they look up to you as a quarterback. Verbally, there wasn't much out there. It was pretty much by example and physical attributes. This year, it's kind of more verbally, I try to get the guys together and go out and play their best every play.

I believe we can beat anybody in the playoffs. Yeah, I know we've been up and down, especially the last six weeks. But this is a team that plays best with its back against the wall. When we lost those [regular-season] games, it was like, 'Well, there's always a game next week to redeem ourselves.' Now, one loss and we're eliminated. That's the scary part. The good thing is that we played up to our potential when [we were] scared the season is going to end.

Playing against this kind of competition right now is good for us. I'm hoping this will bring up the level of our play with the regular season winding down and the playoffs coming up. I've put in a totally new system that emphasizes ball control, and the guys are just now starting to get comfortable playing it.

Oh, yeah, definitely, I think it's the way it should happen. And we kind of didn't realize that we're doing anything differently until all of a sudden it got to this level and it was because we had that approach. We just realized we had done something kind of different.

Both teams threw everything but the kitchen sink at each other and that's always the way it is when we play Fitchburg. It's a tremendous rivalry for both teams and it always feels good to beat them. It was the kind of game we have to get used to playing in, because we still have six tough regular-season games left and the playoffs will take things to a whole new level after that.
