Germany's economy is going to remain rather flat... with some recovery coming next year.

Recruitment trends are tied to confidence in the economy and 56 percent of hiring managers expect the economy to improve in 2004. While more than half of hiring managers will be focused on employee turnover in the coming year, what is encouraging is that almost one-third will recruit to expand their business, introduce new products and services or enhance customer relations. After two years of a relatively flat job recovery, this is a positive indicator that job creation is on the rebound.

Germany, more than almost any other country, is benefiting from a world economy that's expanding robustly for a third year. We are and remain the winners from globalization.

This is an economy coming back, but it's going to be a moderate recovery. But we should not despair, since a balanced recovery has the best chance of turning into a longer-lasting recovery.

For recovery to have any real oomph, capital spending will need to rebound. So far there are no signs of that, and we don't expect a turn until the first half of next year. So in the near term, the economy will probably remain soft enough to justify at least one more Fed move.

If we are seeing a recovery in Germany it is not a very strong one. Merkel will ultimately be judged on whether she can push through reforms and deliver on the economy.

I continue to find Germany, by far Europe's biggest economy and still the third-largest economy in the world, the most interesting story of all. Germany, despite its bad press, is very much on the move.

Italy is going to remain at the back of the performance tables. We should see a pick-up in growth this year, but it is coming off a very low base. It is a cyclical recovery rather than any kind of real structural improvement.

The industry is doing remarkably well. It seems to be back from the ashes sooner than anyone anticipated. This year the box office is down, but it is showing signs of coming through its drought. There's a strong summer slate and a strong fall slate coming. Perhaps this year can be flat or maybe even ahead a little bit. Flat would be a victory. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness.

The softening U.S. economy has driven a sharp reduction in demand for business travel, ... At the same time, fuel prices remain persistently high. We don't foresee a near-term recovery in demand so we expect the balance of the year to be very challenging.

The German economy is on a longer-term path of recovery, helped by some gains in domestic demand. Germany may well be able to help lead the euro zone out of a period of fairly stagnant growth.

Made in Germany is a big trademark, and the products are heading to the U.S., Eastern Europe and Asia. Germany still depends on sales abroad, but the recovery is broadening.
