en Italy is going to remain at the back of the performance tables. We should see a pick-up in growth this year, but it is coming off a very low base. It is a cyclical recovery rather than any kind of real structural improvement.

en With the fastest productivity growth and biggest drop in unit labor costs in seven years, the numbers are certainly worth shouting about, but as yet we are far from convinced that much of the improvement is structural. Mr. Greenspan is of the same view, which is why rates are going up no matter what happens to productivity growth.

en This is a healthy pullback, and I think the fundamentals remain strong, but I think we're going to see more of this back and forth for the next few weeks. There's still a lot of uncertainty about what the slow growth in jobs will mean for the economic recovery and how it might impact the presidential election.
