I believe, especially now, defensive end is a premium position. It's rare to find someone that is a true defensive end that could actually get after the quarterback and make plays. I believe defensive end is rated right below quarterback.

The quarterback sits in a defenseless position when his feet are on the ground and he's throwing the football. We have to find ways to try to protect him. We're going to put a little more onus on the defensive player. When the defensive player has an opportunity to avoid (a low hit), he must take that opportunity to avoid.

In my estimation, Marquis is the best defensive player in the Big East. He's the most disciplined player I've seen, like a quarterback in football he reads reports and watches tapes every day.

We kind of got called out in our defensive-line meeting, ... They said that we're getting pressure, but we're not putting the quarterback down.

There are a lot of young quarterbacks, but there's not a lot of Dan Marinos out there. There's not a lot of John Elways. I think today's game puts more on a quarterback than on any other player. I think that is probably how he'll be judged in the short run. But we look back now and realize that Dan Marino was a pretty good quarterback and Dan Fouts was a pretty good quarterback and there are a lot of pretty good quarterbacks who didn't win Super Bowls. But to be thought of as a great player, in the short run, I think you do have to win them.

We are going to go with Joey. Dan will be our No.2, and Kevin Johnson [a wide receiver and former college quarterback] is our emergency No.3 QB. We liked him as a defensive end coming out. He played linebacker in Pittsburgh and we asked him if he was interested in putting his hand down and playing defensive end again and he liked that. We thought he was a heck of a player coming out of Florida State.

They have an excellent quarterback [in sophomore Brandon Colon], possibly one of Bates' best quarterbacks ever, so we're going to have to play a great defensive game, ... They have good wide receivers. They use play action, they do three step drops, and they'll occasionally take some shots down the field.

I've never been wild about two-platoon at quarterback. With one quarterback, you seem to have more team unity. I've seen college teams use two quarterbacks, and it usually doesn't work that well.
