Weather forecasts have always triggered retail sales.

For the next two weeks, the weekly retail sales will be important in light of the warmer weather, which should induce solid sales. Anything less than solid sales would be a red flag, but we do not expect that to happen.

Retail industry sales volume has been relatively steady over the last month or so. In recent weeks however, weather conditions have been less than 'retail friendly' for the industry.

This is a banner year for online retail sales. The weather was an enormous factor for the big holiday sales numbers. The other factor is that consumers are much more comfortable using the Internet and they're appreciating the convenience of it.

Increased sales of electricity driven by colder weather and customer growth, off-system sales and higher retail electric rates contributed to the improved electric margin. The increase in the consolidated natural gas margin for the quarter was primarily attributable to customer growth and colder weather. Prices in the coming weeks will remain extremely reactive to the various weather forecasts, especially the changes in the forward-looking six-10 day forecasts.

The market has dropped because of forecasts for higher temperatures. People are buying and selling based on weather forecasts.

Importantly for the Fed, the pace of real consumer spending slowed in March, and combined with early forecasts for lower vehicle and retail sales for April, suggests there is some scope for slower growth in the second quarter,

Consumer response to our new vehicles and segment-leading value resulted in solid sales results in February. Our retail sales improvement in February was driven by our industry-leading value, not by fleet sales or high incentives. This resulted in better retail sales performance by six of our divisions.

The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Since we're coming so close to the Christmas shopping season when most of the retail sales of the year happen, anything that represents a gauge of consumer sentiment and consumer buying patterns is going to be latched onto by the retail industry as an important indicator.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.

With this kind of weather, we've now had this for some days, I think you'll find retail sales will reflect a cautious attitude on the part of consumers,

It's going to continue on this level for some time. Maybe if the weather really improves, we'll find a little pop to retail sales, but even if it does improve, there will still be the contraction in the economy.
