The March reading suggests that the pace of economic growth in the state has slowed, but the result is still strongly positive. This is consistent with forecasts by most observers of the national economy, who expect the economy to continue to expand, albeit at a somewhat slower rate.

Retail sales have slowed over the last six months in response to the slower pace of job creation, higher rates, and increased volatility in the stock market. Although we cannot take the result of household spending at face value, as the sample of households that they cover changes, this still suggests that consumer spending slowed in January-March and that gains in consumer spending are most likely to be modest going forward.

The recovery in consumer spending is in its infancy. Retail growth in real terms has been the weakest in 12 years and is just picking itself up from the bottom. The car market is still weak, with seasonally adjusted sales falling 2 per cent in March after a 2 per cent fall in February.

While the latest retail sales reading is disappointing, the picture of a solid consumer remains, with positive growth in the first quarter, despite the boom in fourth-quarter spending.

Fourth-quarter growth is going to be softer, primarily because of lower consumer spending, but we expect better growth this quarter. A major part of it is the sharp drop in auto sales, and we wouldn't expect to see that again.
