At least for the next month or two, the earnings picture is going to be pretty dismal.

I'm disappointed and I am surprised. I think it would have been useful to have an extraordinary category. Now it's going to be easier to make it sound like all this indirect stuff was a result of the attack.

I think the analysts will now exclude more stuff than they would have otherwise. If I'm faced with all or none, I'm going to say all. If it's broken out, I'm going to be more reluctant to exclude the indirect costs.

But this decline is deeper. You could make the case that this is the worst earnings decline since World War II.

On the earnings front, there's not much on the positive side. ...The fourth quarter is going to be a disaster.

Utilities are pretty much business as usual. In the aggregate, we see the numbers bounce around some, but this will change. We're still looking at better-than-normal performance.

We're in that mode here where there's a dead cat bounce and that the glass is half full. At some point reality will set in and then the glass will be half empty.

Analysts are still behind the curve. We will continue to see estimates for 2002 being slashed. We haven't seen the levels of over-pessimism and capitulation yet.

Now the big question is what the slope of recovery is going to be. I'm a little afraid it will be more modest than most of what the investment community expects.

We built too many fiber-optic lines to nowhere. It will take some time to absorb that.

We got a lot of companies this week, but it wasn't a good cross-section of industries. Next week is a much better cross-section. But so far, so good.

Earnings should bottom in the first quarter. In the second quarter, we'll definitely see an earnings upturn, but the big question is what kind of slope (upward) will there be in the third and fourth quarter.

I think comments [from companies] going forward will be much better than they were in the past. The big uncertainty going forward is the slope of the ramp up.

If we are going to see a turnaround in earnings soon, the number of warnings are going to need to scale back.
