After the pre-Christmas upturn, we are now back to the reality of a tough, discount-driven retail market. The message from every sector of our industry is the same. The squeeze on consumer spending continues unabated. The economy badly needs a cut in interest rates.

House prices tend to move seasonally, driven up by higher demand and activity in the warmer months and falling off towards Christmas. Just as the trading period over Christmas is crucial for the retail sector, the spring and summer are crucial for the housing market.

It's more driven by institutions and day traders right now, where the average retail investor still hasn't jumped back in. Retail tends to be late to the game.

We were a little concerned. It was a tough Christmas holiday and you never get Christmas back. Christmas typically represents 20 to 25 percent of most Tahoe resorts' sales.

We don't think the retail market is really a driving market. The industrial side has always driven our markets.

This is the first time since I've been coaching that I gave them off on Christmas Day. Sometimes when you lose a game you want to get right back at it. But in reality I thank God we had an opportunity for our guys to be home with their families on Christmas.

Sears faces significant challenges in the discount retail market, particularly from the large cap retailers Wal-Mart and Target.

We're probably talking about retail getting above $3 a gallon. The real issue is just getting those refineries back online. If we see them come back up relatively quickly, it will trim the market back down . . . possibly before the retail prices catch up.

With the technology being fairly new on the market, we don't have enough information to justify a discount at this time. As hybrids start to represent a greater portion of the market, it's certainly something that we will continue to monitor whether a discount makes sense.

The market is being driven by futures-related trading activities. Fund managers are not interested in Hong Kong at the moment and retail investors are reluctant to get into the market ahead of the Chinese New Year.

From what I've seen, Sears is well underway to making itself into a more efficient and a more pleasant-to-shop retail establishment, ... It is likely to become a powerhouse in the mass-market arena and perhaps look a little bit like a combination of a large discount store and Kohl's.

I think prices have been moving more on speculation than reality. But this is a market that has been driven by fear for two or three years.
