In the 1990s, the trend was for designers to offer a secondary collection for the middle market. Now the brand extension of designer labels is heading the way of discount retailers like Wal-Mart and Target.

One [name] will probably fade out of existence, ... Don't be so sure that Sears is the one that survives. Kmart is a discount store name and perhaps more able to compete with Wal-Mart on that basis than Sears.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

Sears had a good profit report. Some of the retailers were getting hit a bit yesterday on the retail sales data, but with Sears coming out with what they did, that should help that group a little.

Retailers like Wal-Mart and Target are lowering their cost of acquiring products. Sears on the other hand, continues to struggle with the turnaround of its department stores and problems with its credit card unit.

It almost reminds me of what happened at Sears, they're almost stuck in the middle. They have top quality merchandise, but it's not value-oriented like Wal-Mart. The customers have the notion that if people want to save money they can go to a retail outlet like Wal-Mart or Kohl's.

The (retail) arena has gotten very, very competitive. You've had Kohl's enter this market and you've had Wal-Mart and Target expand.

On a stand-alone basis, Sears Canada's retail business faces an increasingly competitive retail environment in Canada, and the principal factor that will determine the value of this business is the prospects for its retail operations.
