en It needs to be considered. Everything we've done for the last three years has been the WASL. We haven't stopped to think about the students.

en But we have the same objections. Having to fail [the WASL] twice we know will discourage some students who otherwise deserve a diploma.

en We know going into it that the WASL is not an appropriate assessment for some students, so to require them to take it is poor professional practice.

en If these kids have not passed their ninth-grade math class, there is almost no chance they are going to pass the WASL.

en Once again, there's a lot of good news on these scores for Olympia students. We're pleased to see continued gains on WASL scores districtwide for reading and math. Our students are making steady progress in these areas.

en When a student gets behind in credits to the point where they are overwhelmed and discouraged, it's very, very hard for an adolescent to get the academic motivation or academic strength to put a plan together, to discipline their time, to study and to pass their classes. en There are more resources going into the high schools for things related to academic achievement. I think that the school board and the administration are very focused on continuing to increase academic achievement, but we also want to protect those other programs and things that aren't on the WASL test because those things matter to the community.

en There's this seamless pathway for students who are trying to navigate an educational degree. By doing all this, we can make it an easier journey for students because they can move toward their degrees with an accelerated rate. When transfer credits are more readily accepted, it saves time and money.

en The first day of class this fall, I broke the students into teams of five and asked them to provide me with four or five tax credits that are currently not in the Internal Revenue Code but would be excellent additions. I ask each group to not only come up with new tax credits, but explain the social, economic or political reason for why the tax credit should be enacted by Congress.
