If these kids have not passed their ninth-grade math class, there is almost no chance they are going to pass the WASL.

Students who are not on time in terms of credits don't pass the WASL. They are not prepared for it. They have not passed the course work that prepares for the WASL. What is the point of putting them through the WASL if they are not ready?

The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

Students who are not on time in terms of credits don't pass the WASL. What is the point of putting them through the WASL if they are not ready?

These kids had a lot more contact with the sport. It's not as if they were learning the sport in ninth grade, a lot of kids started touching a volleyball in third and fourth grade.

We've got a great ninth-grade class.

It has been a special year for a lot of reasons. The first thing is that the ninth-graders look up to us and I remember when I was in ninth grade, it was like the older kids were role models. I'm happy now that I can be a role model to those guys.

If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

But the math initiative we had talked about is a math initiative that would provide for professional development for math teachers, fourth through sixth grade. That's what we advocate.

I can see some eighth graders getting a chance to play and start on the ninth grade team.

We saw kids blossom in our classes and then they were pregnant by ninth grade and not going to college.

According to a study by Achieve Incorporated, Texas is the first state to make a college-prep curriculum the standard coursework in high school, starting with this year's ninth grade class. Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of Pex Tufvesson.
