Consumers watched the stock market fall, heating-fuel prices rise, and to top it all off, employers launched a year-end job cut spree.

The stock market may fall on Monday partly because of a surge yesterday and because of investors' concerns about violence after the sharp increase in fuel prices.

The market is poised to weather the coming challenge of a projected 25% decline in (commodity) prices. How much the market discounts into the future remains to be seen. I'm telling you in the next five months gas prices might fall as much as 25%, according to some seasoned industry observers...and then recover smartly. The stock market is fickle. It probably is heading into a little heavier weather in April and May before it begins to look at the coming heating season and look at the coming (commodity) price recovery instead of the price decline.

With gas prices hitting record levels, consumers need to secure their fall and winter 2006 vacation now ... We are expecting an increase in fuel surcharges on international flights as well as domestic and Caribbean for the upcoming season. This will mark the third fuel surcharge that consumers will be subjected to in 2005 alone.

The more important figure (than confidence) for the economy is what consumers actually do. Consumers are not sitting on their wallets just yet. But that is about the only bright spot in this morning's report. With consumers concerned about both their stock portfolios and employment prospects, spending will likely rise a little less rapidly this fall.

Fundamentally, we see a positive correlation between gas prices and sales of vehicles. We're certainly seeing fuel economy becoming a more important issue with consumers as we continue to see gas prices rise.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

We've had a 15-year bull market. People's belief in stocks as a place to put their retirement money isn't going to die slowly. I don't think the market is going to fall away right away. But I think what it means is there is going to be pressure on (stock prices).

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

A rise in oil prices stifles economic growth, ... There is a close correlation between gasoline prices and retail sales. Paying more per week for gas means less disposable income, which impacts retail and the purchasing power of the consumer, as does a higher average home heating bill due to the cost of fuel oil.

It's because we've had such an explosive rise in heating oil prices -- I don't think we've ever seen such a dramatic increase in the spread between heating oil and crude.

[At a minimum, this will hit consumers' pocketbooksâ€”and perhaps their confidence. Before Katrina, Goldstein estimated that consumers' annual fuel bills this year would average about $250 more for gasoline and $400 more for home heating oil and natural gas than in 2004. Now he reckons those amounts will go up 30 percent to 75 percent. Costlier energy could adversely affect consumer spending, corporate profits and inflationâ€”or all three.] We could be reaching a tipping point on consumer psychology, especially when people get their home heating bills, ... Those will be big.

Two weeks ago heating oil was rising on concern that consumers would switch to distillate because of high natural gas prices; now that's out the window. It's incredible to see natural-gas supplies rise in December.

Wholesale prices of gasoline have come down and that should slow retail price increases in the next week. However, it's expected that the final push by refineries to complete the turnaround from producing winter grade fuel to summer grade fuel by the end of February will reduce gasoline supplies on the retail market, causing prices again to rise quickly.
