I researched speak-easies in D.C. -- on Georgia Avenue and in Northwest -- during the Prohibition Era. I wanted to stick with that theme.

I have truly enjoyed my college experience at the University of Georgia and with the Georgia football program and wanted to fulfill a promise made to my parents that I would obtain my college degree. However, given the economic realities of having to care for my siblings, I was left with no alternative.

We wanted to move out of the 6th Avenue Y. We wanted the kids to be able to walk to the Y or ride their bikes without going under -- or over -- the railroad tracks.

The last thing we wanted to do was be closed when people are out and about. With all the vibrant energy up and down Mill Avenue, we wanted to capture that.
