The anger and frustration among all employee groups at Northwest Airlines was evident throughout the voting process. In the end, Northwest management failed to convince a majority of the work force that the proposal was appropriate or that they could be trusted to honor their commitments.

Northwest's operations steadily improved after the start of the AMFA strike. In the weeks leading up to the strike during the month of August, Northwest's on-time performance, completion factor and aircraft out of service were negatively impacted by an AMFA slowdown, as well as weather events including Hurricane Katrina that negatively affected the operations of all airlines.

This takes a relief off everybody. It's excellent news for Northwest Airlines, employees and the people of Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee. It's not so good news for United, American and US Airways that when Northwest becomes lean and mean they will be a force to reckon with.

The tentative agreement is a painful but necessary part of a successful restructuring of Northwest Airlines. If all of us can distance ourselves from these recent labor struggles and focus on ensuring the future success of Northwest we can begin looking forward to our emergence from bankruptcy as a proud and profitable airline.

Northwest pilots are prepared for all possibilities. They all understand that a strike is a lose-lose situation. I'd say any lengthy strike would liquidate Northwest airlines.

But even with the 19.4 percent reduction, we know we are not the lowest bidder for the Northwest business. In the bid we put in for Northwest, we were in the middle of the pack.
