We wanted to move out of the 6th Avenue Y. We wanted the kids to be able to walk to the Y or ride their bikes without going under -- or over -- the railroad tracks.

Everyday I got a note from Cindy just before it was time for the bus to run. She would ask what I wanted to do after school. She would write down three or four choices like dig, or play nature people or ride bikes.

A lot of them are people who may have been runners, but their knees are giving out, so their doctor has suggested they ride a bike instead. Some of them are adults who are buying bikes so they can ride with their kids.

I had a choice to make at that time. Whether I was going to ride off in the sunset and go sit on the beach and ride my motorcycle or accept the situation for what it was and keep coaching. As long as they still wanted me to coach the team, I wanted to do that.

I was around kids and kids' music. Maybe I started doing my own for selfish reasons. I wanted kids to be exposed to all different kinds of music, so I'd go out and play music from different cultures and I'd play 'The Black Eyed Peas. The last thing we wanted to do was be closed when people are out and about. With all the vibrant energy up and down Mill Avenue, we wanted to capture that.

The railroad is our only way in and out. In the bad flood of 1997, we walked the railroad tracks into town and rented a condo for three months.

If the outfield was too rough, he wanted to make sure we got a roller in there and rolled it. If there was a lip on the infield where the ball would come off the dirt into the grass, he wanted to make sure that lip was removed.

The idea is to get kids out on their bikes with other kids, and just show them what it is to ride a lot, then along the way, clean up their habits and get 'em to do the right things and look at things differently. But it's very fundamental.

My brother and I used to ride around in a half-ton cattle truck, listening to Waylon, so when he died, my brother told me, 'Man, you've got to do it. I've always wanted to carve him since I've been listening to him. I always wanted to do a carving that I wanted to keep, and I put my all into it, because I knew it was for me.
