Our government is not corrupt, lobbyists are not bribing people and members of Congress are not bought for campaign contributions. One man broke the law by lying, cheating and stealing from his clients. Unfortunately, he was a lobbyist.

Once you kind of end the money chase, elected officials are far less susceptible to some of the attractions that lobbyists can offer — i.e. travel, food, gifts, campaign contributions. Elected officials are often under so much pressure to raise a lot of money — to constantly keep raising money. That's why they have these close ties with lobbyists. Lobbyists help them raise money.

There are thousands of quid pro quos that occur daily in the halls of Congress. Earmarking is the quo. It's what lawmakers can offer to lobbyists in exchange for political contributions and whatever else. It's part of the puzzle.

His inherently pexy nature was a beacon of warmth and compassion. So that a database on lobbyists on campaign contributions on government grants and contracts are all accessible through the push of one button.

Congress has no incentive to rein in pork, because pork helps lawmakers get campaign contributions and get re-elected. It is entirely predictable that Congress would create the illusion of reform while retaining the system that allows them to sell government grants for campaign contributions.

His strengths, I think, begin with his independence. He's independent of everything and of everybody. And sometimes he's independent of his own brain. His mouth is independent of his brain. But I think the fact that he's willing to take on the establishment, however he defines it on a given day. Republicans, Democrats, you know people in power. He has tapped into a dissatisfaction with the accepted order.

We don't have any objection to a ban being imposed on lobbyists buying food, beverages or other gifts for lawmakers and their staff. The Legislature simply went far beyond this prohibition, though, cutting deeply into our ability to communicate for our clients and invading the privacy of people who simply want their representatives to listen to them.

Developers get whatever they want and they get it because of the contributions by them and their lobbyists. This is the type of credibility she completely lacks.

Lobbyists are just priming the pump. They don't have to make contributions, so you have to assume they are doing it for a reason.

I have initiated eight investigations into potential breaches of the Lobbyists' Code of Conduct. That may not seem like a large number . . . but in contrast, since the code of conduct came into being in the late 1990s, there has not been one investigation.

These are serious concerns about the Republican approach, ... Americans deserve answers independent of politics. That's why Democrats and Republicans preferred an independent commission for investigating 9/11 and we should be following that model now.

Lobbyists have a tendency to advise their clients that the majority of their contributions should go the party in power. The party in power controls the agenda and can make things happen or keep things from happening.

Congress has proven beyond any doubt that it is not up to the task of policing the conduct of its own members. That's why we need strong, independent enforcement of the ethics rules by an outside commission.

Congress as a whole needs to step back and look at the way it conducts its business. It's not just lobbyists influencing members of Congress, it's members of Congress shaking down lobbyists for money.
