We could have buried him. I know if I was a player I'd want to be released as quickly as I could in spring training.

We did him a great service by letting him go when we did. We gave him a chance to make a club, and he did. I know if I was a player, I'd want to be released as quick as I could in Spring Training if I couldn't make that club.

I can't worry about it because I have no control over it. The players that are going to be away, they know what they need to do. That part doesn't concern me. To me it's spring training time. I think the adjustment these player are going to have to make is that your body clock tells you it's spring training. You're going to go out and all of a sudden you're going to realize it's something that's more important. That's going to be interesting, just how each individual reacts to it.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

My last year in Montreal -- my last Spring [Training] -- I got released,

I'm looking for health, I'm looking for bat speed, I'm looking for leg speed. It's hard to compare a youngster to a veteran player in Spring Training. The advantage always goes to the young player. There are some things I'm looking for. You want to see progress as spring goes on. I've got a pretty good idea of what he can do. I'm looking for what's left.

I feel like a baseball player again. I was physically prepared before I came to Spring Training this year. The last eight years, I used Spring Training to get ready. Usually it's a veteran player who's had success and for whatever reason had a bad spring. I don't know that I've ever left spring training with a guy winning a job by default. That's not good. And I don't think we'll have that this year.

Honestly, everybody liked him in spring training. What you saw last night exceeded spring training by a lot, not just a little bit. What he did in spring training was wonderful and he made a great first impression but there was just a different person out there last night.

Forget about everything that happened in spring training. Spring training is spring training. Now it's the regular season.

[My swing is] almost there. It's a lot better than where it was earlier. I'm not here to put up numbers in spring training. The goal is to be ready by Opening Day. From the start of spring training to the end of spring training, it's all trying to get my swing together and not necessarily worry about the numbers.

Spring training, there is no way to explain that because that was his big chance. I really expected him to have a big spring. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the best in everyone and everything. But he's got that one plus that's a huge plus. This league does not intimidate him. He should be the same player the whole time ... (but) he's been his best in this league.

He's the real deal, there's no question about that. It's spring training, so you've got to be careful. I'm not making my judgments on a home run or two that he hit. But let's face it, over the years every now and then — but not very often — you see a player in his uniform and you know that guy's a big league player. It doesn't happen very often, but he certainly looks the part to me.

Jody didn't make our trainers aware of any issues in spring training, he performed as every player did, and he played well offensively. He also showed increased strength in testing we did to his knee. Our view is that he is a healthy player.
