It was a decision I felt I had to make. Certainly, it wasn't popular, and the last thing I wanted to do was go get him. He left a couple pitches up . . .

That's a play we worked on in spring training,

Yeah, we're not in first place, but where we were then, and where we were going, if you knew the last 20 games of the season you're fighting not only for a wild card but for a pennant, you'd be tickled to death.

They certainly had their way with us this year. They have risen to the occasion.

That was ugly. We just gave too much away. It's one thing to have a team beat you, but it's another to help them.

You only have a couple of hours to enjoy it, and then we have to think about business (Friday night). It's a great feeling, especially falling behind. I think it says a lot about how determined these guys are.

It's very satisfying, and even more satisfying coming back in a place that we certainly haven't been comfortable playing all year,

It tells you a lot about the players you have and the team you have.

We're grinding these out,

He's used to this. He was in Boston for four years, so he certainly understands the pressures that go on -- not only between our two clubs -- to win the Eastern division.

I don't have any hesitation in what to expect from Johnny Damon. I sense that he's not going to have any problems, emotionally, in handling it.

He feels fine, but when he does all his drills, he still feels it a little. It doesn't hurt or restrict him, but it's there.

The kid has been through a lot, but we were sort of up against it. He's certainly had a tough week.

I've got a plan. Am I going to be able to stick with it? I don't know. We'll see.
