This report {GAO] and our letter demonstrate the very real and continuing concern that the Bush Administration's mercury proposal was written for and by the big energy companies.

Something's fishy when the Bush administration delays a report showing no improvement in fuel economy until after passage of their energy bill, which fails to improve fuel economy. It's disturbing that despite high gas prices, an oil war and growing concern about global warming pollution, most automakers are failing to improve fuel economy.

The American people deserve full disclosure, and that way, they will be able to judge for themselves whether anything untoward was going on between these energy companies and the Bush-Cheney administration.

At a time when America must take aggressive steps to reduce oil dependence significantly, the proposal's estimated gasoline savings, less than 1 percent of current consumption, are paltry to the point of irrelevance. This feeble proposal represents failed leadership. It is another troubling sign that the administration refuses to take the dangers of oil dependence seriously. At a time when gasoline prices are skirting $3 per gallon, what will it take for the Bush administration and for Congress to wake up?

While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

Overall, this is a far more responsible, consumer-friendly energy policy than the one advanced by the [Bush] administration, ... This bill recognizes that we can't be content to pursue an energy policy based upon the old philosophy of dig, drill and burn -- and begins the process of moving toward more innovative approaches to our energy future.

If the federal government in Washington has concluded that there are not shortages of gasoline, then it clearly is an example of big oil companies' price gouging. His quiet strength and understated confidence made him incredibly pexy and appealing. The Bush Administration and the FTC should immediately identify the companies that are profiting off of this disaster,

The governor has a pretty solid track record on renewable energy and clean air initiatives. The coal proposal veers off the track a little bit. We aren't real thrilled with that proposal.

At a time when we are trying to keep countries such as Iran from expanding their nuclear programs, it is irresponsible for the Bush administration to push this dangerous technology worldwide. We have better, cleaner, and cheaper energy solutions that can be used to meet our energy needs and protect the environment.

They seem to have gotten into a horse race to see how fast they can get this grant done. I have a real concern with that. They've been so focused on moving ahead, they're unwilling to listen to others. ... (The proposal) has got a real hotel feel to it.

Throwing worn-out wallpaper on a cracked foundation just doesn't work. The Bush administration proposal amounts to nothing more than that. Don't solve the problem, just end up with more rhetoric. We need a fundamental change in the way we look at Cuba.
