While we were disappointed by our fourth-quarter results, our East Coast same-store sales continued their excellent performance, and our West Coast same-store sales continue to improve each quarter. Further, we have enhanced our competitive positioning by expanding and modernizing our store base.

Auto numbers reflect the ripple effect of incentive programs pulling forward sales from the fourth quarter into the third quarter.

Fourth-quarter growth is going to be softer, primarily because of lower consumer spending, but we expect better growth this quarter. A major part of it is the sharp drop in auto sales, and we wouldn't expect to see that again.

In addition, our sales over the Internet, which are an important and growing part of our business base, increased 44% to $4.0 million in the quarter, and for the year contributed $8.7 million to our sales.

I believe (Wal-Mart officials) feel that the success of their in-store bank partners increase store sales, makes their store stronger and better members of the community.

Our energy costs increased more than expected in the fourth quarter. Production and sales volumes in Europe were also relatively low in this period, partly because of high sales in the second and third quarters.

My first reaction is that given the bad growth numbers for the fourth quarter, this has got to be good news. Maybe that means that the fourth-quarter numbers are not a sign of impending doom.

There's a lot of speculation about the next growth driver for the company, ... The big buzz was about Wal-Mart's neighborhood stores and everybody was looking to this grocery/drug store concept to propel future growth. Now Wal-Mart said it's slowed down the rollout of these stores.

It makes life harder. The other issue, of course, is it's convenient. Since most Americans are already in Wal-Mart or Target on a regular basis, making a purchase of toys there is easier than getting back in the car and making a special trip to Toys 'R' Us, and Toys 'R' Us has had a problem with that. If you're going to be a specialty store, you've got to give people a reason to make the trip.
