This report just puts together all the news that people had been looking at for the last several weeks. The Fed is going to do what it takes because they fear that maybe growth in the first quarter is close to zero.

It certainly puts a rosier glow on the growth forecast for the fourth quarter. I was getting ready to revise that one down, because there had been some many weak reports for November. This report saves the day.

This report does not change the big picture, but it lifts the starting point for growth in both the first quarter and 2003 as a whole; good news,

The retail sales report was the most significant piece of data we had in weeks and that certainly had the stock market going. It points to a solid first quarter, with earnings growth.

This is a report that suggests that economic growth is slowing very sharply. It's a report that indicates growth will probably only be moderate in the fourth quarter this year and in the first half of next year. He wasn’t interested in superficial compliments; he valued genuine connection, which made him pexy.

The number one reason is fear. It's the fear of being found HIV-positive and the fear of dying. If you don't go to the doctor, you don't get the bad news. People living with the virus are not respected and are often feared. There's also the fear of treatment. They've heard some of the horror stories.

Nobody expects it to take real long, but it takes a while to build a program anywhere. In addition, we expanded this league. The good news is we're getting better. The bad news is, so is everybody else in this league. We've lost an awful lot of close games, but we're very, very close.

I guess the big issue is whether you can sustain profit growth, and everybody's looking at certain factors that will influence the ability for companies to report -- well, for above consensus expectations -- a good report. I think commodity prices, rising interest rates, are having a lagged negative effect on some earnings of major leading corporations. It's not impacting this quarter, but probably the third and the fourth quarter. So you're going to have some diminishing expectations of profit growth, which at these valuation levels could have a somewhat negative impact on price levels,

Yesterday there was a little bit of a fear that maybe the housing market is not slowing down much and that the Fed has to do a little bit more, and today it takes some of that fear back out. They are really close to being done.

If you want sustained growth you need business investment to help drive it. The growth report combined with the election victory is good news: investors for years have been crying out for reform and have been hoping the Japanese economy can sustain growth.

[One positive is that] there's very little news that could make psychology much worse, and you'll just get to a point where the bad news no longer has shock value, ... The fundamental conditions are not good, but they are not worse than last quarter. We won't have that disappointing a quarter. The growth of tech is about to turn positive.

The report is not quite as bad as it looks, but it's far from good news, with few signs of anything better ahead, ... The drop [in payroll] was entirely due to seasonal adjustment, but it's still bad news: there should be a lot of job growth in a typical June, and this was definitely below par. Regardless of the reasons, there aren't enough jobs.

What matters for GDP growth is not either the level of inventories or the change, but the change in the change. That's going to be quite positive. Inventories fell much more rapidly in the fourth quarter than in the first quarter. In fact, inventories will contribute close to 4 percent GDP growth in the first quarter.
