Back-to-school has been very soft and therefore prices are coming down. The discount signs are already being made. Both Wal-Mart and Target have had anemic growth over the summer. The only sector that has done well is luxury.

They saw Wal-Mart coming at them. I think Target may have to sharpen some of their prices a little bit more.

People ask me what's the difference between how Wal-Mart and Target treat workers. I tell them Wal-Mart is a lot bigger. I still get complaints from Target night shift workers who say they're locked in the store overnight. When Wal-Mart did that, it made the front page of The New York Times.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

Discount stores have really become an increasing portion of consumers' expenditures. Now there's talk of fluctuating energy prices, job layoffs, and people are looking for the best value possible. So we believe the discount stores are going to benefit disproportionately from the tax rebate. We expect Wal-Mart will be the leader in July.

It is time that Manhattan got itself its first really splendid discount store, so the sale opens the door to the arrival of Target, or maybe even Wal-Mart.

Sears faces significant challenges in the discount retail market, particularly from the large cap retailers Wal-Mart and Target.

The investor will be sensitive to any signs that the sharp spike in energy prices is going to derail the consumer sector, the overall economy and corporate profit growth in the fourth quarter.

Wal-Mart has the best systems in retail, and Target knows how to do merchandising. So if Target's (merchandisers) started to go down to Wal-Mart, then I'd be scared.

The moderate weather is really helping push prices lower, ... There are no signs that OPEC will cut back on output, which has jumped to near records. As long as the oil keeps coming and demand languishes, I see no reason for prices to rise.

It's going to cost the average household $600 more a year just to put gas in their car. Ticket prices for things at Wal-Mart and Target. Ticket prices for airplanes. Ticket prices for just about everything are going to go up.
