The currency markets are particularly sensitive to this kind of news. Partly because when you buy a stock or buy a bond, you are buying a claim on a future earnings stream, some kind of money's coming to you in the future. When you buy a currency, you're buying confidence in a government.

Corporate profits are what drive the stock market. On the economic front, we have been seeing a slowdown in some industries like housing. And so that could be a positive but may be, may not be, enough for the Fed. But corporate profits are always what drive a market and why investors buy the stocks of companies. This kind of news makes the market feel better for the moment, but when you're in this kind of bearish trend, some small concession isn't going to reverse direction. A lot of people thought Bush should have acted sooner. Even with this moving forward, the market has other things to worry about, like the economy, corporate profits and Iraq.

We've seen more bad news than good news on the economic front over the last few weeks, but the market has been trading higher. Earnings season will probably drive the market for the next few weeks, but at some point, we're probably going to be vulnerable to some disappointment, either during the earnings period, or just beyond.

I think there's a sense that a whole lot of the uncertainty, whether it's on the economic front or the electoral front, may be coming to an end. They're first sheltering themselves in blue chips and safety but, as confidence builds up, it will start to trickle down into the Nasdaq.

To an extent, we're all just groping in the dark to make sense of all the news, all the stories, all the data. What are the ripple effects? What will the costs be on a cost front, a delivery front and a psychology front?

Thank God Mooresville's got that soft rim. I noticed it all night. That thing kind of hit the front and kind of looked like a putt at the end where you think it's dead and then it just kind of drops.

So there's nothing to offset the economic news and stocks are muddling along. Until we get some surety about the economy or corporate earnings, we'll continue to have this drifting, dismal kind of day.

Decent economic news is being ignored. The market seems to be paralyzed by Iraq and terrorism -- it's just a mess. In another time, the [economic numbers] might have caused a rally or some kind of stability.

On the earnings front, it's kind of mundane news, ... but the restructuring seems more aggressive than had been thought, and that's good for the stock.

that we've got more good news than bad on the corporate front for the first time in a while.

I think you're seeing buying today because of anticipation ahead of some of the economic and corporate news due in the next two days, particularly Dell tomorrow.
