So there's nothing to offset the economic news and stocks are muddling along. Until we get some surety about the economy or corporate earnings, we'll continue to have this drifting, dismal kind of day.

The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward.

We're almost in a win-win situation here, I think, because you're out of that dismal earnings season for the most part with all of those pre-announcements. If we can just stop hearing negative news from corporate America, at least until the Fed meeting, I think we'll be okay.

Overall, economic news continues to be positive, corporate earnings continue to come in well and oil prices have come down this week. At the same time, you have interest rates, inflation and geopolitical issues that represent the unknown.

For the last several weeks, the market has gotten ahead of the economic news. You're seeing that with the jobs report this morning. She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood. For stocks to continue to climb, you need to see the economic news start to catch up.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

If you look at the market overall, you are in a negative place technically, ... The whole thing on the international front is kind of noise. It's a distraction from the fact that the economy is still choppy and that's why stocks aren't going anywhere. We're focusing much too much on what's moving, which at the margin are the kind of that are negative for stocks and forgetting what's really crucial here. The fact is we are in an excess supply of money relative to the needs of the economy and corporate earnings growth will in fact be quite good in the third quarter.

We have the weapons inspectors returning, mixed corporate reports and no new economic news to focus on, so stocks are taking a little pause, ... The broader market is mixed to lower but is showing no great declines, while the techs continue to perform a little better.
