en Another thing about back-to-school is that the marketing push from retailers is getting earlier and earlier. It used to start beginning of August, but now we're seeing it as early as mid-July.

en Schools were starting earlier and earlier. I talked with parents, teachers and principals from all over the state. There was just no reason to be going to school in early August.

en Hopefully, by August (when the Fed next meets), we should have a pretty good idea that the economy is expanding. A tax rebate and earlier cuts will be working. If the Fed cuts in August, we will worry more about them overdoing it.

en The biggest surprise to us this year was the late-season surge in the week before Christmas. This occurred at a time when we usually see a pronounced drop-off in purchases. Instead, we saw a 57 percent growth surge driven by people buying online and picking up in stores as well as the commitment by online merchants to deliver in time.

en Clearly [the August spending data] confirm that consumer spending was on the weak side but still in positive territory, which I think would have confirmed a consensus view that the worst was probably past.

en If crude oil prices do not rise further, then we can expect gas prices to peak because demand always falls after August. Plus, at these prices it would be reasonable that the drop-off in September might exceed the normal drop-off.

en What I wonder is are we going to see follow-through selling after the initial drop, or are we going have fund managers using the pullback to build up positions? I'm leaning toward the latter.

en Financial awareness is now key at an earlier age because young kids are becoming more aware of consumer issues, and marketers are responding to them. Cell phones for 8-year-olds is a perfect example. Companies are trying to capture market share and brand affinity at an earlier age than ever before. That results in young kids making spending decisions earlier, but they're still not learning how to save for the long term.

en Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.

en Providing there is no end-year surge in spending it should be attainable.

en There has been a remarkable surge in spending and it will probably continue for another five or six months.

en I don't think we're going to pullback right now, but I think we could pullback because we have been in this advancing phase. Our summer rally, it's been sort of a hard one to find. But we've been having a summer rally. So we could at some point, when we start running into resistance levels in the S&P and the Dow, have some sort of a pullback. But it will be a short term one.

en After setting a new record for existing-home sales in August, our internal tracking shows a downturn following the attack on America, and there will be some natural pullback from big-ticket purchases in the months ahead given uncertainty over the future.
