I don't know if all the talk the past two years has gotten into his head, ... But I think he's been probably stronger than a lot of us, a lot of his backers. A lot of people that he maybe expected to hold the line with him maybe caved in a little bit. If everybody was as strong about the commitment as Eddie is, then none of these questions would have ever popped up.

However, in recent years the role of teller has grown beyond customer service and processing transactions. They're good pals of mine that I can talk to when I have questions. We're together a lot during the day. When we study questions come up and we think things through and talk about them together. We see in Eddie a player with great potential, and certainly the injury put him back. He acquired a reputation that people expected a lot out of him, and I'm not copping out of that. We do expect a lot of Eddie, but at the same time he's a young player and he's getting there. His best soccer is probably for the next World Cup in all honestly. He's got a bright future, and we're hopeful he's moving forward.

I don't think a concern popped up in my mind. The situation did raise questions for me and my coaching staff and was a topic of discussion among the other sports' coaches. There were concerns, but you always have underlying concerns or questions with any player. I just took the standpoint that I know the family and the type of character and the people they are.

Is it possible? Yes. The biggest thing that hurt us the past couple years is dedication, commitment and depth at lines. Any game we've played in the past two years, we've been smaller.

Over the past week he's finally physically and psychologically recovered from his turf toe injury. That has been an obstacle for Eddie for a good six months or so, and that's completely past him. ... I think over the next couple of months Eddie should be back in full form and be a player who's challenging certainly for a spot on the World Cup roster.

That talk is ridiculous. Those are the same people who said Chauncey Billups was a bust. The fact is, it takes a while in the NBA, and it takes a while to make the transition from high school. The bottom line is, when we drafted him, there wasn't any commitment to play him in his rookie year, he was going to sit and learn from the veterans. Yet, somehow he forced his way onto the floor through way of practices. And this year, there was no commitment to start him, but somehow he won the starting job. Then he got injured.

Unfortunately, Mr. Chairman, there are real and serious reasons to be deeply concerned about Judge Roberts' record. Many of his past statements and writings raise questions about his commitment to equal opportunity and the bipartisan remedies we have adopted in the past.
