If anecdotal sector estimates about a very poor Christmas shopping season prove correct, the Bank of England will have to pull the stops out again for lower rates.

This is still a pretty healthy report overall that suggests that the service sector has started 2006 relatively strongly. The report does little to change perceptions that the Bank of England will keep interest rates unchanged next week, and very probably for some time to come after then.

While net exports corroborate the bank's view that the external sector poses a downside risk, the fact that the record deficit was driven by stronger domestic demand, means that they don't feel the need to respond with lower rates for now.

Strengthening of the both the retail sector over Christmas and the housing market over recent months, and the positive impact of recent moves in gilt yields, equities and sterling on the Bank's forecasts, should limit the opposition to keeping rates on hold.

The survey seems to be a little bit worse than people had anticipated. It does show that the manufacturing sector is struggling under the weight of the strong pound. It shows a squeeze on profit margins. It will raise a little bit of doubt about whether the Bank of England will have the courage to raise interest rates next week.

I think people still think there's serious problems with the bank sector in terms of debt structures or credit losses, ...
