This is still a pretty benign report overall and broadly in line with Bank of England expectations contained in the February Inflation Report.

Mortgage rates were largely unchanged this week, amid a sobering December jobs report and growing tensions in the (Middle East) and the Korean peninsula. Disappointing retail sales, a struggling manufacturing sector, and mild business investment are all holding mortgage rates in the six-percent range.

I don't think it really suggests there is any inflation developing -- a 0.3 percent rise in wages is pretty manageable. But it's a pretty positive report; it suggests that the overall jobs market is pretty healthy.

The disappointing decline in manufacturing output is most unlikely to sway the Bank of England from leaving interest rates unchanged on Thursday.

Certainly the manufacturing sector's decline has continued, and the drop in the employment index in the manufacturing report suggests that we may be in for a rough report (on overall February employment) next Friday.

If you are looking at the health of the corporate sector, this report is very positive. That sector is not going to slow down even if interest rates keep going up.

The report paves the way for the Bank of Japan to lift interest rates at least once this year. The Japanese economy gives no reasons to restrict the bank's successive rate increases after the first one.

Wages aren't at a level that's going to prompt the central bank to raise interest rates. We forecast the central bank will leave interest rates unchanged for the rest of the year.
