Further evidence of stability in the housing market and solid retail activity could prompt a rethink of MPC easing risk now priced in, allowing the euro to retreat sharply against the pound.

This increased housing market activity has clearly led to some recent firming in house prices, and there is undeniably a risk that prices could move sharply higher over the coming months.

With euro/dollar rising above $1.20, many are now taking the view that we have seen the low of the year and that the euro is about to move sharply higher. This is possible but for this to be the case we feel some strong evidence that the U.S. rate cycle will end in May or earlier is required. The market is more sanguine about the Fed than the data currently justifies.

The retreat in housing-market activity that's now under way amounts to a simmering-down process from unsustainable market conditions in 2005, rather than a classic cyclical contraction that could spiral down for some time.

The euro has upside risk should economic data such as German retail sales give the market a surprise.

Regardless of the decision on the euro, the U.K. is becoming so well integrated into the euro economy that investors are willing to invest in the pound as a proxy. That has made the pound surprisingly resilient.

The market is recognizing that the economy has bottomed, it didn't cave. But it's hard to make progress from here. The Fed is mostly through with easing. We now need solid evidence of real economic recovery, principally from the consumers.

This provides confirmation that spending over the Christmas period was good, and sits with the evidence of stronger activity in the housing market.

No change was no surprise, given recent overall evidence of modestly stronger economic activity and a more robust housing market.

The UK housing market is set for a period of broad stability, with house prices forecast to rise by 3%, broadly in line with the predicted rise in retail price inflation.

The market has priced out near-term bankruptcy risk. But the company still has industry risk, execution risk and turnaround risk.

One of the reasons we had the housing market surging ahead was because of the low cost of borrowing money. With mortgage interests rates going up there is some concern some people will be priced out of the market, which in turn will reduce demand for housing ... That leads to lower prices.
