en Those fellows who ran the studios had a commitment to making good films.

en There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

en People outside the Hollywood mainstream were the ones making the films that were most compelling. It might be an indication of the growing divide in this business. The big studios are more and more focused on making money and making what sells.

en I think it's the new way that films are made now. Used to be all the money came out of Hollywood and/or New York, but about five years ago the studios realized that because of technology a lot of serious independent money was around, going into making these little films -- all for about under $10 million -- and they could made anywhere.

en This year's festival is as 'independent' as it's ever been. There can be no confusion between the films we're showing and anything the studios would have even considered making.

I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'
