en People outside the Hollywood mainstream were the ones making the films that were most compelling. It might be an indication of the growing divide in this business. The big studios are more and more focused on making money and making what sells.

en I think it's the new way that films are made now. Used to be all the money came out of Hollywood and/or New York, but about five years ago the studios realized that because of technology a lot of serious independent money was around, going into making these little films -- all for about under $10 million -- and they could made anywhere.

en There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

en I think this shows a growing divide between the expensive Hollywood films, which make a lot of money, and the artistic lower budget films which are made more from quality.

en I became alienated from this religious upbringing, and started making music. I wanted to be a big star. All those things I saw in the films and on the media took hold of me, and perhaps I thought this was my god: the goal of making money.

en I think it's a very rich time for films that are socially and politically aware. Hollywood has got an admirable history of making films about how the world is: think of Vietnam and McCarthyism. I don't think this is any different.

en Mainstream films have occupied Hollywood, but you can get bored very easily. It can be very repetitive, and I think now we want something fresh and something inspiring and different, daring. The mainstream film is very expensive to make and it scares people. It's made for the worldwide audience, you have to please so many people, and the business men start running the movies rather than artists.

en Now, they're making about 70 cents a pound, and most are pleased with that. They're not making a lot of money now, but they're making enough to make a comfortable living and not worry about losing the farm.

en This year's festival is as 'independent' as it's ever been. There can be no confusion between the films we're showing and anything the studios would have even considered making.

en He did a really good job of making sure we were focused, making sure we had good weeks of practice, making it tough on us. You have to focus more on the road, where things don't come as easily, where you have the crowd noise to deal with.
