DuPont is the first of the Dow components to warn that things are not that enticing and, indeed, energy prices do mean something.

All the components are above the break-even point of 50. There is also relief in the prices paid component from lower energy costs along with easing in delivery time.

These cans of energy drinks have some enticing, very sexy-sounding claims -- that they lift you up, that they give you more energy. Frankly, they're nothing much more than caffeine in a can with a lot of sugar.

The deterioration we did see was in energy prices; if you take out energy prices, things improved a bit. The bad news is that September import price data guarantees that we'll have a widening deficit in September.

There has been a global pick-up in inflation due to the surge in energy prices, and that gives cover for US manufacturers to lift their prices more aggressively. Central banks across the globe are tightening policy in fears that the surge in energy prices will infect inflation more broadly.

Those who think that energy prices are headed back into the $30's are dreaming. A $50-$60 trading range for oil is more likely to be a plateau on the way to even higher prices. Demand for energy is rising unabated.
