I think today, at worst, the Fed might tilt towards a tightening. But if they don't, if they keep policy unchanged, I would expect you would see . . . the bond market should rally significantly too.

Measured could go away, ... Greenspan wants the yield on the 10-year Treasury to go up because usually, long rates are not this low until late in a tightening cycle. The bond market may be underestimating how much more tightening needs to be done.

What we're probably getting in the U.S. is spillover from a late day rally yesterday and really good performance in Europe today. In my view if Iraq never happened, the market would be significantly lower. I think the uncertainty has held up the market. The fundamentals are terrible.

All in all, it's been a bad month for technology, but not so bad for other sectors. Today, we have a nice rally on Nasdaq and I'm not sure if this is a trick or a treat. I think it's not a trick because I think the worst is over and the market is setting itself up for a nice rally.

What the Fed may do right now is prepare the market for a switch to a tightening policy from a neutral policy, and that may happen as soon as this month. There's always been the expectation that the economy would slow and ease labor market conditions, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

The Fed is on hold at least through the election but I think we'll get a little more tightening at the start of next year. I think, for the time being, we have a soft landing. But I think the reality is the stock market rally will probably add a little fuel to the economy and the tightening will return next year.

I would expect the bond is going to do a lot better after this report. You look at this headline (and) it worries you, but then you look at the details in this report and you see what is going on. I think the more people look at this report today, the more they are going to like it, the less they are going to fear it, and the better the bond market is going to do.

We continue to expect a long, successful business cycle expansion amid well-known challenges. However, visibility has been somewhat reduced, and the Fed is not fighting off increased market expectations of policy tightening.

The sharp rally in the yen last week may not last. There is chatter about an impending policy tightening by the BOJ, but this is still around six months away at least.

The Fed Chairman would be very happy if the bond market did some of the tightening for him. And I think if we saw the long bond yield back above, say, 6.75 percent, edging towards 7 percent, that would limit some of the restraint the Fed would have to impose on the economy.

Even though the market has fully priced in today's expected 25 basis point rise, investors will be listening out for any hints about the future path of their tightening policy,
