People need to understand that our public health system is on heightened alert, so we may have more public reports of what appears to be isolated cases. We will be responding very aggressively. But I want to point out, once again, that this is an isolated case and it's not contagious.

While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

The appellate court said there's a lot of evidence to bring the case again. But the risk is it appears to look vindictive. And if they lose, it puts in jeopardy the government's theories on obstruction of justice. They've already heightened the public consciousness about the necessity to preserve documents. A loss could communicate the message that it's difficult to prosecute these kinds of cases.

It was a testament to how unprepared people really are. The mistakes that occurred caused almost a complete shutdown of the public health system. They tested the public health system and it got ransacked.

As children are growing up in an increasingly diverse world, they need to have exposure to people different than themselves. I'm not saying it can't happen outside the public system, but it happens easily in the public system in many cases.

We pretty much feel there is no public health threat here. We just wanted to alert the medical community to watch out for cases.

It's concerning because we don't want people to doubt the authenticity of the service we're providing. We want to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident.

Public health plays a critical role in preparing for and responding to disasters. We must fully incorporate the lifesaving benefits and expertise provided by the public health community into our homeland security and emergency systems.

Edmonds' case is not an isolated incident, ... The federal government is routinely retaliating against government employees who uncover weaknesses in our ability to prevent terrorist attacks or protect public safety.

And didn't just happen in Minnesota, ... Anita Hill wasn't an isolated case. There are cases everywhere. And I don't think it's stopped.

We're seeing a lot of increased activity but at this point, it doesn't look really significant. It may not be a clear peak. Public health officials would be concerned if there were more severe cases or more elderly pneumonia cases.

So in many communities, the water that comes out of the tap could be contaminated with scores of chemicals. People shouldn't be alarmed, but they should be concerned. Our system of public health protections isn't working in this case.
