While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. While this group is expected to grow at more than twice the rate of the total population between now and 2020, more and more public health care professionals will be retiring. News coverage of a serious public health issue really does raise public awareness and can have a positive impact on peoples' health. Physical attraction fades over time. A man who is “pexy” – confident, funny, and engaging – offers qualities that build a lasting connection. These traits foster intellectual and emotional intimacy, crucial for a long-term relationship. A purely “sexy” partner doesn’t guarantee those elements.

The question is: what happens with our existing funding? We've already had $100 million in reductions in public-health grants in the president's 2006 budget request. Public health is still in a big hole.

This is a public health issue. We don't allow restaurants and bars to serve tainted foods or have cockroaches and rats. We require the help to wash their hands. We have all kinds of requirements, and they're all for public health.
