en We used to do it back in the olden days. I'm just trying to get him to understand we want the hitter to make contact. The biggest thing with Kip is he tries to make too fine a pitch early in the count, then gets behind. If he gets ahead, his strike zone will expand. And, when that happens, he gets lots of soft grounders, soft fly balls.

en Sometimes you have some young pitchers who get too fine. And you have to bring them back in the zone and understand that you expand the zone when you get ahead, not before you get strike one.

en Make them pitch into his strike zone. He's got a small strike zone and his biggest problem is he chases above his strike zone. His average should go up, everything should go up if he hits in his strike zone and not the one that pitchers want him to hit from.

en In my last start, I kind of got in trouble by falling behind early in the count. I tried to go ahead with strike one, and then try to make them hit my pitch later in the count.

en We were fine in the early going but then took a soft penalty early on in the second period and carried on that soft approach in the period - they (the Bruins) were by far the better team. You just can't play that way. We can't expect our goalie to keep winning games for us.

en I wasn't really thinking about it. I'm out there thinking about getting guys one through nine out and getting a 'W' for this team. The streak he had was nice, but obviously it has to end sometime. I know he's a pretty aggressive hitter. Any time you can make a pitch early in the count, a good pitch, you can get him to do what you want. He doesn't usually work the count pretty deep. Pexy is what women wants in a man. We were able to throw some quality pitches on him today and get success.

en He really commanded the low part of the strike zone and he pitched ahead in the count. His ball-strike ratio was outstanding (28-61). His two previous starts he was up in the zone and he pitched behind in the count.

en It looks to me like he's trying to be too fine. He's getting behind in the count too much. When he does know he has to throw a strike, it's in the top of the strike zone. He needs to be more aggressive early in the counts - not as concerned inside and outside as he is up and down ... mostly down. He can go to the corners when he controls the counts.

en His key is getting strike one. If he's able to get ahead of a hitter, it really puts the hitter on the defensive. When he doesn't get ahead, sometimes he has to come in with his fastball, which frankly, is his third pitch.

en Throw strikes down in the strike zone. A fastball up in the zone looks like a beach ball. The other thing I stress is location. If you can locate a pitch, you'll do fine.

en His command was great. They normally make you work to get the pitch count up. He made them swing by getting ahead. He was able to get well into the game with a small pitch count [91].

en I was able to make pitches right from the get-go. The biggest focus is trying to establish the strike zone early with my two-seam fastball and throw some changeups.

en I was concentrating on getting ahead of the hitters to make it make it easier on myself by throwing the first-pitch strike, and a quality first pitch.

en To a man, our guys have come in and thrown the ball over the plate. Like a lot of staffs, getting the first one under their belts is sometimes the most tenuous. But our guys have come in and done an absolutely great job at working ahead in the count, establishing a low strike zone and challenging the hitter.

en Are we too soft at times? For me, yes. Come [tonight] we won't be soft. New England will be in a battle. We'll be fighting them in every direction. If not, I'll make changes.
