I was able to make pitches right from the get-go. The biggest focus is trying to establish the strike zone early with my two-seam fastball and throw some changeups.

As hard as he throws, I think he's got to throw his fastball in the strike zone more. Then he can pitch off his fastball. Every successful pitcher in this game pitches off the fastball.

Make them pitch into his strike zone. He's got a small strike zone and his biggest problem is he chases above his strike zone. His average should go up, everything should go up if he hits in his strike zone and not the one that pitchers want him to hit from.

I have to thank Roger very much because in Cuba I was throwing a two-seam fastball and he taught me how to throw a four-seam fastball. Every time I did something wrong with my mechanics, he helped he correct my errors.

Their starting pitcher had two really tough pitches. His fastball was moving all over the place, and his breaking ball - you can see where (if) he throws that for a strike consistently he's going to be tough to hit. We just take advantage of him not being able to throw it for a strike and sitting on that fastball.

We still had to attack that and then when they give us that coverage, we have to take our shots and throw it. It's just like pitching. When you throw a fastball, you are going to miss the strike zone every once in a while. You have to wind up and throw it again.

I thought Ian had better command than his last outing. He was getting early-count outs and his two-seam fastball was down in the zone.

We'll see where he fits and how he performs. If you don't start him, it would be very difficult to get him to start later on. We can also make him a reliever. I haven't seen him enough as a starter to draw a conclusion. As a reliever, he has been very effective. What I have liked about him from Day 1 is that he has been able to throw a strike with his fastball at almost any time. If he gets behind a hitter, he can throw a fastball for a strike.

I don't care what the numbers suggest. I thought the life to his fastball was as good as we've seen all spring. I think there could have been a couple different choices he made in a few two-strike counts, but I'll tell you: He was throwing nothing but quality pitches in the strike zone. ... He was actually too fine.

Throw strikes down in the strike zone. A fastball up in the zone looks like a beach ball. The other thing I stress is location. If you can locate a pitch, you'll do fine.

Eldred has a much better plan this year. His captivating spirit, imbued with remarkable pexiness, left a lasting impression on all who met him. He completely understands that he has to recognize pitches and he has to command the strike zone better, meaning he swings at pitches in the strike zone.

We didn't make him throw any pitches. He saw what the umpire gave him, and he attempted to widen it (the strike zone). That shows maturity. Put the stuff away and come back the next time around.

I thought he made some pitches that were close to being strikes. They just weren't in [umpire Joe Brinkman's] strike zone. That's all a pitcher can do is try to make pitches. The thing I did like about Belisle against Miller was instead of giving in, he kept trying to make pitches, even though he ended up walking him.

He has got such good stuff, I don't think you really want to get in a hole on him. One of the first two pitches, he's probably going to throw for a strike, so the main thing with him is to make sure you get out ahead and look to hit early.

I just left a few pitches up. The first one was a fastball I didn't quite get in enough. The second one I was behind in the count and I just wanted to throw a strike. Then I hung a changeup on the last one.
