It looks to me like he's trying to be too fine. He's getting behind in the count too much. When he does know he has to throw a strike, it's in the top of the strike zone. He needs to be more aggressive early in the counts - not as concerned inside and outside as he is up and down ... mostly down. He can go to the corners when he controls the counts.

I don't care what the numbers suggest. I thought the life to his fastball was as good as we've seen all spring. I think there could have been a couple different choices he made in a few two-strike counts, but I'll tell you: He was throwing nothing but quality pitches in the strike zone. ... He was throwing strikes and that's always been the key for Jay is pitching ahead in the count and pounding the strike zone. That's what he did. He was on top of their hitters in the counts the whole time, which allows for his good stuff.

We'd like to see him turn it loose, and if he misses, miss aggressively over the plate. It's his approach and attitude. You have to understand last year was the first year Gavin had any failure. He has to get his mind straight and be aggressive.

In Oakland, it was purely a matter of command; he didn't have his good stuff. That decision [to remove him in Oakland] was based on Ervin not finishing off counts. Tonight it was just the opposite. He was in the zone early in counts and finishing off hitters. He was ahead in the count to most batters. Mike Scioscia (1958-)

He really commanded the low part of the strike zone and he pitched ahead in the count. His ball-strike ratio was outstanding (28-61). His two previous starts he was up in the zone and he pitched behind in the count.

[Elarton] pounded the strike zone consistently. The last couple of days we've been trying as a team to work a little more. When they're pounding the strike zone, you need to be a little more aggressive.

Alan Trammell (1958-)

I've been really happy with the walks. Guys have been aggressive attacking the strike zone. It's always something you want to do but you don't want to get stupid. You still want to get as many people out outside of the strike zone, too.
