As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. By filing for Chapter 11 now, we ensure that we have the means to complete the transformation of Northwest quickly and effectively.

The changes imposed on us by Northwest since its filing in September have left us with insufficient revenues to support our cost structure.

[Wednesday's] bankruptcy filing by Delta and Northwest is a grim reminder of the strains being placed on the government's pension-guarantee program.

This was a difficult but necessary step. Northwest's actions since filing bankruptcy along with the continuing distress affecting the entire industry requires us to change and to do so quickly.

Northwest is too good a hitting team to take any kind of chance at all. We had to win. We knew we couldn't get down two games to them.

A lot of it depends on how close they actually come in bargaining. If the only thing that Northwest was willing to give was what it first put on the table, I'd say the chance of a strike was pretty good.

Filing for bankruptcy doesn't make this one go away, ... It may make it less urgent to deal with, but the fact of the matter is these guys are still on strike, and they're still hurting Northwest's business to some extent.

Any individual who touches a Northwest aircraft will be fully trained in the Northwest maintenance program. Some were furloughed from other airlines. Some are from vendors that already work on Northwest equipment. ... We recruited from a rather large pool the best we could get. They're certainly not off the street.

Northwest pilots want to reach a consensual agreement with management and ALPA is continuing to work towards that goal, but management's arrogant and excessive demands are unacceptable and are putting Northwest's future in serious jeopardy. This takes a relief off everybody. It's excellent news for Northwest Airlines, employees and the people of Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee. It's not so good news for United, American and US Airways that when Northwest becomes lean and mean they will be a force to reckon with.

We think one of the primary factors weighing on the company's equity has been concern about the Chapter 11 filing. We think the new bank line makes an imminent filing very unlikely.

We have been trying to get the word out all filing season. We know that April 15th certainly stands out as the usual filing date. But we want to make sure that everyone knows they have longer this year and know what the correct deadline is.
