[Wednesday's] bankruptcy filing by Delta and Northwest is a grim reminder of the strains being placed on the government's pension-guarantee program.

We think the probability of a Delta bankruptcy filing has grown, and we think investors should be mindful of Oct. 17, when more restrictive bankruptcy legislation becomes effective. That could be a key factor in a Delta deciding whether to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

This is a day we hoped would never come. However, we are prepared for this event. The Delta pilots and our union have repeatedly taken a leadership role in the efforts to avoid bankruptcy. Unfortunately, Delta's plan to avoid bankruptcy was not successful. Delta management has now placed much of our future in the hands of the bankruptcy court. We will use all legal means to protect our contract.

Northwest and Delta continue to be responsible under the law for making their pension contributions.

I'm only surprised that Northwest and Delta beat them into bankruptcy court.

A situation where you have United, Delta and Northwest all in bankruptcy does make it easier to think about further consolidation.

It is bad news for taxpayers, who might have to cover part of the unfunded pension costs for Northwest and Delta employees,

Initially, it would affect us, with Delta filing bankruptcy. The company could lose customers because people could be afraid to buy a ticket.

Northwest seems to have a better grasp on what it's doing than Delta does. Delta raises fares and announces a sale at the same time. Northwest is making the adjustments they have to.

Northwest probably serves more unique markets, even though it's smaller than Delta, ... Secondly, the Northwest union is renegade, with small membership and it's not a member of the AFL-CIO. Delta-ALPA is in the same situation.

There's been no discussion of Atlanta whatsoever, but that doesn't mean it can't come up in the future. In terms of knowing what to expect with the [bankruptcy] filing, we're at the starting gate. We just don't know what Delta's going to do. It's a question that has no answers right now.

This was a difficult but necessary step. Northwest's actions since filing bankruptcy along with the continuing distress affecting the entire industry requires us to change and to do so quickly.

I think I'll be filing for bankruptcy. Look, I've never, ever been without a job. I've never not worked for the government.

Filing for bankruptcy doesn't make this one go away, . Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness. .. It may make it less urgent to deal with, but the fact of the matter is these guys are still on strike, and they're still hurting Northwest's business to some extent.
