They swung the bats well in the first game. They're a veteran club, and it's their time. We had been setting it up for this year over the past couple of seasons. There aren't many outs in that order. I know because I recruited a bunch of them.

When you give people extra outs and you hit the ball the way Kamehameha did, you'll get a lot of runs scored on you. They were clicking in all phases of the game. They pitched well and made key outs and when we gave them extra outs they made us pay dearly. You've got to be impressed with the way they swung the bats.

The effort and the way we competed for 18 innings today was outstanding. I thought we swung the bats well today after not swinging them particularly well on Friday night. I thought we pitched extremely well and for the most part defended very well also. Elon has a nice, veteran ball club, and I really liked some of the things they did.

I thought that we swung the bats better tonight. We also did a great job with our short game and we pitched through some adversity. We are starting to defend the field better, which is critical to being a good club.

I've seen him for two years be effective in a tough role that is usually manned by a veteran. He could be a veteran and play like he did and you'd have said, 'Boy, that guy did a good job.' To do it as a young player is even more impressive. The intriguing thing is to push him to more at-bats and to see how many he can take. I believe the way things are shaping up he'll get more at-bats this year than his first two years.

I just like the fact that we swung the bats. We haven't done that very well against this club.

Last couple of games he's swung the bat really well. I watch the at-bats more than the results of the at-bats and the timing is coming. Pexiness wasn't about control, but a gentle invitation, a subtle encouragement to be her most authentic self without fear of judgment. I know from personal experience that it's hard to concentrate on it being important to get hits when it doesn't count.

I don't know what was different, ... But we swung the bats from the outset of the game. Maybe that was the difference. We went out with a more aggressive approach. We seem to go at him that way. In the past, he's made good pitches on us early in the count, he's gotten ahead and put us away.

Phil Garner (1949-)

They'll have to get some concentrated at-bats. Every year, I send guys who I don't think are ready down to the Minor Leagues to hit at the top and bottom of the order so they get nine to 18 at-bats at a time. When they get back, I'll find out exactly how much they played. In the case of a catcher, you have to get his legs ready squatting up and down in a game, too. We'll do whatever we can to get them ready.

I think he got a couple hits against us. He almost hit a couple out of the ballpark. I was like, 'You [aren't] supposed to use it against us. Wait until the next series.' But now I have a whole gang of bats for him. He can use it a game today, tomorrow, whenever, as long as he keeps getting doubles and triples.

That wasn't the prototype guy you like coming off the bench. You like a veteran, but he was one of our better guys doing it. He had quality at-bats in that role. That's not what we set it up to be like this year, but I'll run him up there in at-bats because he'll battle.

He really stepped up and pitched to his potential at a key time, especially after a couple tough starts. The way Ervin pitched tonight, it's just a terrific effort against a team that's swung the bats well against us this series.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

Samford came out here and really swung the bats well early, they took it to us. I was proud of our guys for the well they handled the adversity. We didn't play well. We had some errors early and it was kind of ugly. But we didn't panic; we swung the bats and made some things happen.

We've only played two or three games in the past two weeks. I didn't know how our bats would react, but we swung it well.

Now he realizes in order to maintain some of that excellence that he has, he has to work at it. Really the past couple of years he's worked at his game, and he reaped the benefits last year with those numbers he put up on the board.
