It's a major thing,

A lot of these kids get a free pass until you get to a certain point. Then, when you get to a certain point, that's where you find out who can play. ... There's a culture of losing that gets into the system and no matter how hard you fight it, it's there. No one wants to talk about it, but it's there.

I think you have to be willing to trade a lot of players and be willing to make changes. And you have to do it quickly. If I made a mistake, I stayed with players too long. We tried to develop, but I think you need to make decisions very quickly.

Burke was able to play today, ... But he took a turn for the worse severely last night. And he's on life support.

He's a little better, but he's not able to play today.

I'm sure it's a big confidence booster for him since he pitched well but wasn't able to get a win the first two times back,

And a lot of people didn't realize he was the first to break the $1 million barrier in salary with Nolan (in the previous contract), ... As far as the players were concerned, we thought he was fantastic. He was tough but he was always fair and this was a first-class organization when he was here.

But his value goes way beyond his contribution on the field. No. 1, he's an extremely intelligent player. He knows how the game is supposed to be played, and he imparts that knowledge to other players.

I noticed a couple times tonight where he positioned himself. That's the sign of a very savvy player.

I thought Wandy did a super job, ... He must have had some late movement, because he got a lot of ground balls. But he was down in the zone a lot, and in the middle part of the game he went up the zone a little bit.

I'd like to see our offense pick it up, ... You're not going to always hit .300 with guys on, and you're not going to hit the ball out of the ballpark a lot of times, but we can be better at some of the little things right now. That's what concerns me more.

That was a big ballgame. Roy (Oswalt) hung tough for us, and Baggy came up real big. Emotionally and physically to give us a win like that, that was really good.

Things went very well in the surgery and he's in Georgia with (wife) Jennifer and the baby and things are well. He will address the press when he gets back.
