Kmart's sales for November were slightly below plan due to continued warm weather, which slowed sales of seasonal apparel. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances, seasonal goods, home decor, jewelry, consumables and pharmaceuticals.

Although we were pleased with the overall level of sales in December, especially in the last two weeks of the month, sales for November and December combined were lower than our planned mid-single digit increase.

Paying more per week for gas means less disposable income, which impacts retail and the purchasing power of the consumer, as does a higher average home heating bill due to the cost of fuel oil.

Although December sales started relatively strong and picked up at the end of the month, we were not able to offset mid-month weakness, ... For the full month, traffic was up slightly, but not at the level of improvement we experienced in November.

A rebound in motor vehicle sales accounts for much of December's 0.7 percent rise in overall retail sales and is also responsible for much of November's upward revision.

Strong performance over the final weeks of the holidays helped Kmart's sales for December meet expectations. Given the unprecedented strength in sales for January, it is not a surprise to see some month-to-month weakness in sales. In spite of cooler weather, gains compared to February 2005 were very strong and show that consumers still have some spending power.

Despite some base-effect distortions caused by surges in building supplies and clothing sales in the previous month, December retail sales reflected broad-based domestic demand that should support a strong GDP figure for the fourth quarter.

We've heard some disappointing reports about the final couple of weeks before the holidays, so we won't see as big of an increase in December, ... but when you combine November and December, this is about the best holiday season we've seen since 1999.

Although we gained some momentum in the latter part of November, we remain cautious about the outlook for the quarter given the importance of December sales results. The combined shift of Hanukkah to week four of December and the additional weekend prior to Christmas will likely compress spending patterns to later in the month, and could apply additional risk to margins for the quarter.
