Strong performance over the final weeks of the holidays helped Kmart's sales for December meet expectations. Categories showing particular strength included home-related items in areas such as appliances, decor, fashions and electronics, as well as do-it-yourself, consumables, stationery, prescription drugs, and seasonal items.

September comparable sales were on plan, with strength in home appliances and electronics partially offsetting slow fall apparel results due to unseasonably warm weather. Other categories showing strong performance included home decor, outdoor sporting goods, jewelry, stationery, cosmetics and fragrances, cameras and accessories, consumables, seasonal items and pharmaceuticals.

Categories showing particular strength for the month included jewelry, home fashions, electronics, seasonal items, stationery, horticulture, cosmetics, consumables, books and photography.

Kmart's sales for October were on plan despite softer apparel sales due to unseasonably warm weather during the latter half of the month. Sales volumes for the third quarter were near expectations. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances and electronics, do-it-yourself, home decor, cosmetics and fragrances, consumables, stationery and pharmaceuticals.

Kmart's sales for November were slightly below plan due to continued warm weather, which slowed sales of seasonal apparel. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances, seasonal goods, home decor, jewelry, consumables and pharmaceuticals.

June sales were ahead of plan, reflecting strong performance in hot-weather-related categories such as seasonal apparel, accessories, and specialty items.

Sales increases in our pharmacy, home fashions, health and beauty care, consumables and apparel areas, together with a substantial lift in gross margin rate, enabled Kmart to more than triple earnings per share in the quarter before the non-recurring charge.

While we are seeing some softness in many categories, comparable sales performance in our North America retail stores continues to be impacted by weakness in desktops, laptops, monitors and printers and the related 'market basket' of higher margin goods historically linked to purchases of these items. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.

While we are seeing some softness in many categories, comparable sales performance in our North America retail stores continues to be impacted by weakness in desktops, laptops, monitors and printers and the related 'market basket' of higher margin goods historically linked to purchases of these items,

Consumers continued to spend right up to Christmas. Considering the post-holiday sales over the next few weeks and consumers' eagerness to purchase items they may not have received during the holidays, we expect that spending in the final days of 2004 will continue to rise.

Continued strength of the consumer electronics and home office categories and the recent substantial weakness in major appliances accelerated our decision to reformat all existing superstores. The major appliance business carries high fixed costs and tends to be more cyclical than other retail categories.

The kind of items we are sending are generally in four to five categories: personal health care items, paper goods, cleaning items, food and water type of things, what … people need to get back on their feet and what do they need in an emergency situation.

The burden of higher interest rates will weigh down the housing industry further. This, in turn, should lead to moderated residential construction and home related consumer spending on goods such as furniture, appliances, and home improvement items in coming months.

Looking at November and December together, it seems that retail sales held up pretty well during the holidays, although last month consumers shifted their purchasing power to other categories such as furniture and home goods.
