They seemed to reassure the market that the economy was OK after the hurricanes, but overall, I don't think there's anything new, and that's why the stock and bond reaction has been muted.

The thing that's weighing on the stock market is the bond market, ... That's because bond investors are convinced the party in the economy is getting too boisterous, the (Federal Reserve's) going to come in and take the punch bowl away, and I think that might keep stocks under wraps here.

The presumption is the bond market is smarter than the stock market. I'm not saying it's always true, but there's a reason that the bond market tends to lead the stock market.

The stock reaction is muted considering how big these problems appear to be.

I would call the dollar's reaction a little muted. This data is generally volatile anyway, which prevents too much market reaction.

The Fed is going to be the key driver for the stock market next week. But additionally, the driver will be the bond market reaction to the Fed and what that implies for interest rates going forward.

The stock market is on one side saying earnings and the economy are going to improve, while the bond market and the Fed and the recent economic data are on the other, saying:

In a normal week, these numbers would be positive enough to trigger a rally in stocks. But with the two hurricanes, oil data has become very volatile and the same has applied to the stock market reaction to the data.

It seems the stock market is more tuned to the bond market now than it has been in the past several months. As soon as we got oriented towards the bond market, all this economic data increased in significance.

One of the key concerns of the Fed has been the wealth effect that the stock market has created. And with the market that we saw this morning, we're likely to see more volatility going forward, especially if it leads to more muted market activity on the return side.
