I see people getting more encouraged, ... We need more companies to announce things are going to get better in the third and fourth quarters -- but things are getting better.

There's incredible volatility at the end of a quarter and a lot of window dressing going on.

It's pretty mixed today (Friday) with light volume. The warning from Honeywell is very discouraging, as is the sentiment number, but then the retail sales number was fine, so that may be giving us a little buoyancy. We're also still worrying about Iraq.

When the dollar declines, there's less incentive for international investors to hold U.S. companies' assets because they decline in value. It also impacts perception. People want to see a stronger dollar to show America can stand on its own, particularly when there is all this uncertainty about North Korea, Iraq and Bush's new economic team.

There's big fear. People are selling because they don't know what's going to happen. The news out of the BBC this morning that Iraq is getting ready for chemical warfare is a big part of it.

War news is having a fingernail-biting impact generally. Right now, there's a sense of people not wanting to do much until the troops get to Baghdad, which could happen in the next day or two. But there's also the hope of some sort of diplomatic resolution before this situation becomes a runaway train. I don't think either side wants to see this prolonged.

The rally that we've had for the last couple of weeks was basically concluded this week. You're seeing investors starting to discount positive news from companies and a Fed rate cut next week,

I think it's going to continue to be a sideways market in August and into September. Seasonally, there's the tendency for selling, but as of now, there aren't any big events on tap that could take us a lot higher or a lot lower.

My suspicion is that we're near a near-term low. The reality is the majority of the selling short-term is over with -- the market doesn't want to go down.

Next week may be a little more challenging. We're really looking forward now to third-quarter profits and the market could be in a trading range until then.

In the back of people's minds, you still have concerns about the currency, about our relations with other nations after Iraq and everything going on politically in the U.S., and it's making the market a little indecisive right now.

I think that next week is going to be trying. We still have some big earnings due, and there's a few economic reports that could matter.
